Psalm 1 — The Choice

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor standeth in the way of sinners,
Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD;
And in his law doth he meditate day and night
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the streams of water,
That bringeth forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also doth not wither;
And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The wicked are not so;
But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away
5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgement,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous
6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous:
But the way of the wicked shall perish.

The whole book of psalms opens with this choice: will we delight in God's word, or will we go down the path of the foolish? Knowledge of God's word isn't so far out of reach that we cannot attain it; it's right here, before us.

The psalm opens and closes with the same theme: the delight and knowledge one takes in God's word and the knowledge God has in the one who delights in him. When we meditate in God's word, working to know him better, he knows us all the more.

So will you join in the psalmist and grow in excitement for what's ahead? Just as beauty is inherent in the words of poetry, so is wisdom inherent in the word of God. The whole psalter is beautiful and opens with the most important -and accessible- question: will you delight in God's word?
