Psalm 29 — The One Who Thunders

A Psalm of David

1 Give unto the LORD, O ye sons of the mighty,
Give unto the LORD glory and strength.
2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name;
Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters:
The God of glory thundereth,
Even the LORD upon many waters.
4 The voice of the LORD is powerful;
The voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the LORD breaketh the cedars;
Yea, the LORD breaketh in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He maketh them also to skip like a calf;
Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild-ox.
7 The voice of the LORD cleaveth the flames of fire.
8 The voice of the LORD shaketh the wilderness;
The LORD shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the LORD maketh the hinds to calve,
And strippeth the forests bare:
And in his temple every thing saith, Glory.
10 The LORD sat as king at the Flood;
Yea, the LORD sitteth as king for ever.
11 The LORD will give strength unto his people;
the LORD will bless his people with peace.

What a psalm we have before us! Sometimes we need a psalm to simply sit as a wonderful work of praise and power. God's word is power, from power and accomplishes his will in power. Let us give God glory! Let us ascribe to him adoration, as is due.

I just love the simple repetition in this psalm. Give it to God! Give him glory and strength. We need none for ourselves. The one who thunders is the only one with any real power. Let us take pleasure therein.

The voice of the Lord does it all. "Let there be light", and it is done. Two words and the opening of light into the great void occurred. The maker of all things, with a voice of power and majesty, splinters what he's made at will. Let us fear and praise God.

God sits as king. He sits in power over every event of any import. His power at the flood is clear. Any doubt of the flood is merely an effort to dismiss God out of irreverent fear. Let us use this psalm to foster a godly fear. Let us praise and magnify God.
