Psalm 8 — How Majestic

For the Chief Musician; set to the Gittith. A Psalm of David.

1 O LORD, our Lord,
How excellent is thy name in all the earth!
Who hast set thy glory upon the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou established strength,
Because of thine adversaries,
That thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers,
The moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him?
And the son of man, that thou visitest him?
5 For thou hast made him but little lower than God,
And crownest him with glory and honour.
6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands;
Thou hast put all things under his feet:
7 All sheep and oxen,
Yea, and the beasts of the field;
8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea,
Whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
9 O LORD, our Lord,
How excellent is thy name in all the earth!

The Lord's excellence is praised and on display in this psalm. His great works of creation and sustaining are lifted up as feats to show his glory. Glory rising even to the heavens in which he sits.

While his glory reaches great heights, it is even in the little and lowly that we see his magnificence manifested. Little children and infants, the glory and wonder of happy parents, show just how strong and faithful is our God. He set our earth, a spinning sphere, to travel through our solar system. He established seasons and systems to sustain life. Massive monuments to his eminence, yet he is mindful of the small lives held within our hands.

He is mindful of you and I. He hears our prayer and gives life. He hears our cries, even the cry of a little child. We are not mighty in ourselves, but his mindfulness is a mighty blessing upon all the great blessings he gives. Life, lands, plants, animals, hearts to love and eyes to see are among his gifts. O Lord our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth!
