Psalm 98 — God’s Work is Dependable

A Psalm.

1 Sing unto the LORD a new song;
For he hath done marvelous things:
His right hand, and his holy arm, hath wrought salvation for him.
2 The LORD hath made known his salvation:
His righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the nations.
3 He hath remembered his mercy and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel:
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth:
Break forth and sing for joy, yea, sing praises.
5 Sing praises unto the LORD with the harp;
With the harp and the voice of melody.
6 With trumpets and sound of cornet
Make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD.
7 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof;
The world, and they that dwell therein;
8 Let the floods clap their hands;
Let the hills sing for joy together;
9 Before the LORD, for he cometh to judge the earth:
He shall judge the world with righteousness,
And the peoples with equity.

What is the message of our New song? What must we sing in our praise of the Lord? Why, all of his marvelous works, that he is seen & known by the nations, and that he comes in judgment and equity. The globe on which we stand was founded by an outstanding creator.

While our lands feel weak and tottering, by the foolishness of our leaders & rulers, the earth made by God is secure. We see each season and wait in confident hope for the next. To live with such easy confidence is no little thing - we must express our gratefulness for this gift to God.

It is not only God's past works that are sure and steadfast. He promises to come again with judgment & equity. Like our tottering nations, modern justice seems feeble and ill founded. It often feels like we have no future if we're depending on the peoples around us for support & solutions. Yet, we worship a God who promises to come a righteous justice, meeting out what is due & right to everyone. Just as God founded the solid rock beneath our feet, he upholds justice & equity on high for our hope.
